What to do in a "Black Out"

An aeriel view of a city-wide blackout

This is an aerial, TV image, of a black-out. It happened when a car hit a power line. It was interesting, because you could actually see the lights die out, in a progressive fashion until only the exterior perimeter was illuminated. Right down the center of the screen, went black. Ever feel that way … alone, scared, like darkness surrounded you?

Ever cry out to God and not receive an answer? Ever feel a “black-out” due to a physical time of illness, an accident, or experience one in a spiritual sense? Ever have a hard time feeling God’s presence and the light of His Spirit?

Even the strongest of God’s children can feel this from time to time. Frankly, it’s difficult to understand and even more difficult to get through. But never doubt that God is with you. Why? Because even Jesus experienced this. Part of Jesus’ surrender to the Cross—included a moment of darkness—a heavenly “black-out.”

Jesus asked if “this cup of suffering” could be lifted … and Father God was silent (Matthew 26:36-46). On the Cross, Jesus asked “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me? (Matthew 27:46)” So you see, we are in good company, when we go through such a time as this.

So how do we get through it? Notice that the “black-out” in my image—only occurred in the area where the accident happened. The lights are still on in the city, in the surrounding areas. Remember that! God promises never to leave or forsake us—even when it may feel like it. In Psalms it says that He is aware of our waking, our sitting, our lying down and all things in-between.

Trust that His Spirit within you will guide you. His Word will still teach you. His love will always reach you. And He holds the aerial view of your life in His hands. Keep believing. ‘Cause there is no “black-out” in eternity. And God holds you securely; in fact, He is our power-line for today, into forever.

What do you do in a “black out?” Hold onto the Light of the World!
