To Exalt the Lord

Today is the National Day of Prayer. This year’s theme is based on Colossians 2:6-7 and has been entitled: “Exalt the Lord who has established us.”

Psalm 34:3 tells us, “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!” To magnify, means to cause something to be increased through the use of a lens, like a telescope. It also means to expound upon the good qualities of something or someone. And it means to glorify or to give honor and praise.

It’s been a difficult couple of years for all of us, that’s true. But to a person, most of us can also find some things to be grateful for. Spring is arriving. You’ve got breath in your lungs. God is on the throne! He is faithful, loving, kind, just, merciful, and gracious—to name just a few of His attributes—that deserve some magnification, honor and praise! And prayer—our personal and corporate communication with the Lord—is a wonderful method of expressing our heartfelt gratitude, as well as our reliance upon the One True God.

Here are the words from Colossians 2:6-7 (from the theme above): “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (ESV)

As we pause today, and join our hands and hearts to lift up our nation, our leaders and one another—may we ask for God’s blessing upon our land (2 Chronicles 7:14). May we also turn our eyes toward Jesus and offer Him praise—for His presence, protection, and faithful care. And may we look ahead—walk with Him—offering hope as the gift of our Salvation—until the whole world learns of His renown.

Prayer, is our simple communication with God. It’s His divine response to us. It’s one of the ways that we can demonstrate our unity as a nation and exalt His holy name!
