The Eyes of a Father

Weekly Meditation for week of 18-24 June 2022

To me, my Dad was a handsome guy, (guess every daughter thinks so). One of my favorite things about my Dad was his blue eyes. They reminded me of the sky on a sunny day. They could sparkle with humor or mischief, and yes, that’s probably where I get those qualities. They would crinkle around the edges when he would smile or find something amusing. He always liked the Sunday cartoons and called them the “funny papers.” Like all of us, his eyes could reflect many emotions, and our home could reflect those as well.

In the Bible, there is a description of Jesus in Isaiah 53: 2 & 3: “For He grew up before Him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; He has no form or majesty that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him.”

This verse has always given me pause, because there was something about Jesus that drew the crowds to Him, multitudes in fact. Young and old, from infants to the elderly, sinners to saints, males and females, from rulers to warriors, He was sought after; the populace wanted to meet Him and listen to the wisdom of His words. So I have always wondered--if it was His eyes, in part--that drew them. Every emotion that we feel in our hearts, is reflected within the depth of our eyes. And since Jesus has the biggest heart, I think His eyes shine with love.

The way He loved was contagious, outrageous, all-consuming. He always took time for those in need, gave a listening ear, a moment a time, a healing touch, and a gentle Spirit. That is what drew others to Him. Our eyes and heart tell everything about us. These are the most precious gifts that we have to offer.

His eyes reflected “forgiveness” on the cross, “healing” for the sick, “compassion” for those who are grieving, “fellowship” when He broke bread, “caring” when He gave His message, “anger” in the temple, “laughter” with His disciples, and “all-consuming-love” when He looks at you. His eye is on the sparrow and He watches over you, with the eyes of comfort, peace, joy, and protection. Whatever you need, He will give. The “look of love” is written in His eyes, and upon His heart!

Happy Father’s Day to every guy! We celebrate dads, husbands, grand-dads, uncles, and friends. And remember, you're a role model in some capacity in your life, so we wish you a great day and hope your eyes reflect Jesus' love to those around you.

P.S. This piece and photo's are especially poignant this year ... since it's in Memory in of both of my parents: Cecil and Pauline Goshorn.
