Stop and Smell the Posies

A chipmunk enjoying the flowers
A chipmunk enjoying the flowers

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Stop and smell the roses.” Well, I loved catching this little chipmunk in the act of stopping and investigating the Phlox and Inpatients of a neighbor’s rock garden.

This little fellow served as a reminder to appreciate the smallest (and largest) gifts that God bestows along our path. Pausing now and again is one of God’s means of teaching us to be grateful for the stillness of His presence.

Let’s read a few Scriptures that encourage us to seek the Lord in this way:

Psalm 46:10: “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth (NIV).”

Exodus 14:14: “Yahweh is fighting for you! So be still (NOG)!”

Psalm 107:28-29: “Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. 29 He calms the storm, so that its waves are still (NKJV).”

1 Samual 12:16: “Now stand still [where you are] and see the great thing [wonder; thing] the Lord will do before your eyes (ESB).”

Whether we are learning to see the Lord’s hand in creation, meditating upon His Word, or spending time in dedicated prayer—these are disciplines that He rewards! Those who seek the Lord—will find Him.

Let’s read a few promises about seeking God together.

Matthew 7:7-8: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened (NKJV).”

Jeremiah 29:13: “And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart (NASB).”

Hebrews 11:6: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him (NIV).”

Isaiah 55:6: "Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call on Him [for salvation] while He is near (AMP).”

Psalm 119:2: “Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart (NKJV)!”

Dear Lord, I wonder how many times You wish that we’d be like this little chipmunk and simply stop and investigate Who You are, all that You’ve made, and Your Word with wholehearted devotion. How many times do You merely wish that we’d come and sit at Your feet in worship? How often do You pray for us to come and delight ourselves in You—above spending time in any other pursuit? Oh Father, let these be the desires of our hearts—stillness in Your company and seeking You—throughout the day with a bent toward listening and obeying. Amen.

We can only seek the Lord if we practice the discipline of stillness. It’s only in learning to appreciate quiet communion and prayer and the Lord’s company—that reading His Word and His fellowship become a rich exchange—not duty or obligation.
