Resolutions versus God's Promises

2 P & P Weekly blog for 27 January - 2 February 2024

Many people begin the New Year by making resolutions. These self-made vows and goals are meant to be their guideposts for the next 365 days. They are often set around topics like vocation, weight or exercise, or plans to do more, be more, or accomplish more.

Once in a while, someone may think to include God in these. They may decide to make a more spiritual-minded and Spirit-filled resolution than self-focused. But frankly, that’s the exception, not the rule.

I guess that’s why I’ve never been a fan of them. The other reason I’ve never been prone to making resolutions is because the rate of keeping them is relatively low. Usually, by mid to late January, many of the promises we make to ourselves are typically forgotten or neglected, or we’ve already gotten so busy as to put them on the back burner.

I began the New Year with seven days and seven Promises from God’s Word (If you missed these—they are available on our 2 Pause and Praise Creations Facebook Page). Why? Because I wanted you to start 2024 with your eyes on the Lord and His faithfulness. He is a Promise Keeper. He’s the One Who can fill our minds with His Will and the desire to obey whatever He will unfold for us.

Now, He does not give us an exact blueprint ahead of time. But let’s look to His Word and a particular promise from it to see what He does promise … (It’s one of my favorite memory verses, by the way): “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” It’s from Hebrews 13:5b. Another translation says, “I will never desert you or abandon you.”

As I was searching for an image to go with this entry, I found this … another confirmation of God’s nearness and promise to be with us—always—from Joshua.

Aren’t those comforting words? They cover your resolutions, vows, and goals and remind us that God walks with us. They cover our relationships, hopes, and dreams. That’s why I love to study and meditate upon His Word. That’s why He encourages us to inscribe His Holy Scripture in our minds and hearts and to teach it to the next generation(s).

No matter where you find yourself—on this day of January—or in your life, trust the One Whose Word and promises endure forever. God’s got your back. He’s the One Who’s got a plan and purpose for your every step. And He’s the One Who will help you fulfill everything He has in store.

Here are a few more promises to look up and treasure: Isaiah 40:8, Psalm 119:89, Isaiah 12:2, Proverbs 3:5-6, Jeremiah 29:11-13, & Psalm 9:10.

Is the Lord challenging you to choose His promises and place your faith in Him—over a resolution you might have made? Do any of the specific verse promises above help you resolve to trust Him more fully?
