Prayer of the Sky

One day I was pondering how many changes that the sky goes through, in any 24 hour period. From the first break of dawn, to the falling of dusk, to the first appearance of stars—from the shifting clouds to developing rain and streaks of lightening—this canopy above us communicates God’s love, majesty, and creativity—and to me, forms a prayer …

Evaporative Rays of the sun, captured over the Blue Ridge Mountains

I am the sky above you,

In my fingers are the clouds.

I hold the sun,

In all its splendor,

And the stars in a veil-like shroud.

I am a gift if you will see me,

High above the atmosphere.

I bridge the earth and the gates of heaven;

God is there—He is here.

As I change and unfold like a canopy,

I am a witness of God’s love.

And everyday I am writing a message,

Of His glory—

Just look, above,

To me … the sky.

But pray, not, to my heights,

I only serve to point you,

To the Father, Creator,

Lord, of power,

And of might.

For as you gaze into the heavenly realm, the sky above your head, may you also look into the eyes of Jesus, and be wholly led! Amen.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky displays what his hands have made. One day tells a story to the next. One night shares knowledge with the next without talking, without words, without their voices being heard. Yet, their sound has gone out into the entire world, their message to the ends of the earth. He has set up a tent in the heavens for the sun, which comes out of its chamber like a bridegroom. Like a champion, it is eager to run its course. It rises from one end of the heavens. It circles around to the other. Nothing is

hidden from its heat.” Psalm 19:1-6 GW
