Nest or Cocoon?

Weekly Inspiration for 11-17 June 2022

We have this little birdhouse affixed right outside our front door. The first year, we drew a pair of finches. The second year, sparrows usurped their home. My photos are of the nesting material that the sparrows gathered to create their nest, inside. The left snapshot was from early in the season. The right, was after they had exited, their young were raised, and I was about to clean it out. I was struck by the amount of “fill” and its density. They had made not so much a nest, as a form of cocoon.

A bird sits in a nest,

Which encircles their body and young.

It’s a loving embrace,

Fashioned, used for a season,

—Until they are done.

But these sparrows had formed,

A type of cocoon.

Oh Jesus,

That’s how I want to be held,

Close, right up next to You.

A nest is open ended, but this cocoon-style version surrounds (cradles, encompasses, hides) the bird and its eggs (or chicks). Lord, that’s how closely I want to follow, walk with You and live in Your presence. It’s how I want to love You, season by season. It’s how You shelter me, daily; and I am forever grateful!

May Your Word and presence fill me, daily, so that I am held up-close and near to Your heart. I’m grateful to be Your chick, a child of the King. I gladly rest ‘neath the shadow of Your wings! Amen.

Here’s a little nesting-material for the soul: Psalm 91:4, Deuteronomy 32:11, Psalm 17:8, Psalm 36:7, Psalm 61:4, Psalm 63:7
