Hosanna in the Highest

Hosanna is a Greek word meaning to save, rescue, or Savior. In Hebrew, it also means help and "I pray.” These are all appropriate as Jesus made His triumphal entry on this day, Palm Sunday, the week proceeding His crucifixion. The crowds laid down their cloaks and cut palm branches to give Him honor and praise.

"A very large crowd spread their clothes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and laying those on the road. Then the crowds who went ahead of Him and those who followed shouted: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the Highest!" Matthew 21: 8-9

As I was thinking about the coming of Easter, I was also thinking about His arrival as a baby. Interestingly, similar praise and pronouncements were made at His birth. Luke 2:13-16 says, "Suddenly there was a multitude of heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: 'Glory to God in the Highest, and peace on earth to the people He favors!’ When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let's go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.’ They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger."

Those who sought Him as a babe found Him as King. And those who worshiped as He came to be our sacrifice found the ultimate Son, risen three days later.  And if we seek Him and give Him our praise, we will join with the saints and the angels this Easter to praise Him and say, "Hosanna in the Highest, May You be glorified, forever.” To do so is to crown Him Lord of all.

Jesus, my Savior,

I lay a palm branch at Your feet.

I bring my praise and adoration,

To the manger, the Cross, and Your Mercy seat.

To You be all glory,

All majesty ascribe ...

One day, all of Your children,

Will gather from every nation, tongue, and tribe.

And we will proclaim you,

King above All,

Hosanna, in the Highest,

At Your feet, we will humbly fall.

We’ll form a crown,

‘Round Your throne.

"Hosanna in the Highest,” for You are worthy of praise. May You make Yourself known to us, more nearly and dearly, every day. On this Palm Sunday, we bow our heads and hearts to adore You and lift our eyes to Your throne. Thank You for being our sacrifice, rising again, and reigning on High. All Glory is Yours, our blessed Savior, on earth, as it is in heaven!
