Hay bales seemed to form a caterpillar on the field
Hay bales seemed to form a caterpillar on the field

It was nearing the end of Summer,

When the farm on the hillside caught my eye,

On a drive late in the afternoon,

‘Neath a canopy of brilliant sky …

The hay bales were lined up in the field like a caterpillar,

In the open grass they lay.

Round loaves were ready for harvest,

Drying in daylight’s last rays.

They coiled on the farmland,

Joined end-to-end in a single serpentine.

Each row displayed the work of the season,

Like soldiers marching in a line.

It is nearing the end of Summer,

And you are on my mind,

I am thinking of the harvest,

And of the shortness of time.

The days are running together like a caterpillar,

One falls into the next;

Sunrise and sunset seem to collide,

We get up, and before we know it, it’s time to rest.

The months are like a serpentine,

We mark off the calendar in seasons, not days,

We march to the tune of our own beat,

Mindful of only our ways.

It is nearing the opening of eternity,

And God looks to and fro,

He searches all of earth and heaven,

For those who follow Him, here below.

We appear small like the caterpillar,

Like dust we will fade away,

The things we have done for the harvest,

And the things that we do and say,

Are the things that will truly matter,

When before Jesus we stand …

Will we be able to do anything but praise Him?

Or will tears fall like grains of sand?

Usually, we think of Autumn as being the season of harvest. But this year, as we have been on day trips, I have noticed the stages of growth of the crops, of the hay being harvested, of vineyards being planted. To everything there is a season, and a time under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). And one day, will be the beginning of eternity. We will give an account of the harvest that we have accomplished while we have been on earth.

"Plow new ground for yourselves, plant righteousness, and reap the blessings that your devotion to me will produce. It is time for you to turn to me, Your Lord, and I will come and pour out blessings upon you." Hosea 10:12 GNT

Just one person can make a difference in the life of another. There is power in one person who is willing to listen and care, because they can also open a heart, and win a soul to Jesus. Sometimes the greatest soul-winning tool that we possess is to just live out the love that is within us. Giving grace, giving forgiveness, being the hands and feet of Jesus, is to be a living-harvest for His kingdom. I used to think that to be a soul winner, you had to have a certain testimony or a certain technique. Not true. You really just need God in your own heart and want to share that love with others.
