Icicles formed,
By the waterside.
Day after day they were formed,
By the moving, rising tide.
Their patterns and shapes,
Were ever-changing art,
That was draped by the current;
They purely stole my heart …
Because I could imagine them,
As beauty to God’s eye,
Like when He looks upon us,
As we experience life’s ride.
The things that hit us,
Good and bad, like waves,
Are making, creating,
His Will stamped upon our days.
So when the winds blow,
And you feel the icy tide,
Know that He’s not finished;
In His presence, rest and abide.
These icicles were impressive and lined the shore of Lake Michigan. How high the tide must have risen to encase the railings in such beauty. And as we enjoyed God’s splendor, which purely shone in the sunlight, it made me think—that the Lord’s Spirit is constantly moving and changing, creating and renewing, growing and flowing—within us, to stamp His image upon our lives.
When the waves hit, we tend to want to take cover. But Jesus intends for us to weather the storm in His presence and care. He is ever-present in the wind, in the cold—through every element of challenge or hardship—not to hurt us—but to transform us. While sometimes, it takes time to see what He is up to … it is much like these icicles; you need the right angle and perspective to see them as art.
What we see as cold waves, God sees as creating icicles—heavenly art in the making—day by precious day. So hold tightly to Him, the firm foundation. And though the process takes time, in His eyes, you are beautiful—a mixture of strong and fragile, yet held in His care, always. Never doubt that what we experience shapes us, transforming us into the image of His perfect design.
“We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 HCSB
