Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk

Spilt milk at the grocery store

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Don’t cry over spilled milk?” My parents used it occasionally to emphasize that not everything is a “big deal.” Many things in life can be quickly and easily remedied, like milk being mopped up from the floor.

Well, I have to admit, when I saw this image in a little grocery store, I just had to capture it. It’s not a scene you see every day, and it served as a good reminder and perhaps a good spiritual lesson as well.

How? If we allow the Spirit of sovereignty over every area of our lives, He can quickly convict us of wrongdoings. He can prick our conscience and help us repent (turn away from a habit or activity that we know displeases the Lord). He teaches us to be genuinely sorry for mistakes, mishaps, etc.

But let’s take this milk, for instance. The store will very quickly clean it up. Why? Because they do not want someone to fall. A spill could quickly cause unwanted circumstances or a domino effect. This is true in our spiritual lives as well.

Even if we confess our sins as 1 John 1:9 encourages, the Lord does not always erase the consequences of our actions. Some spills (words, actions, attitudes) cannot be so easily put back in the carton. Some are not so easily wiped up.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (NIV).”

Thankfully, when Jesus gave His life for us at Calvary, His sacrifice was much like this milk. Because of His gracious act and nature, His righteousness was poured over our sin—our wrongdoing. Essentially, He encourages us daily: “Don’t cry over spilled milk.” Draw near to Me. Study My Word and learn what pleases Me. Confess your sins to Me when you fail. Trust Me to cover your transgressions with love. And no one is beyond My grace.

Should we show genuine sorrow and humility when we disobey the Lord? Obviously, “Yes.” We need to fear and revere our Father, but we also need to bask in the wonder of His forgiveness and acceptance, which are gifts to us daily.

Isaiah 1:18 invites us into a conversation (as well as vulnerable confession) with the Lord: “‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the Lord. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.’” (ESV)—or as the precious purity of milk!

And here is one of my favorite Scriptures to encourage our maturity in walking with Christ: 1 Peter 2:2-3 "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good (NIV)”.

Dear Lord, grant me wisdom to understand my sinful nature. Teach me to run to you and confess everything. But teach me to surrender—lay these at Your throne—to learn and grow from my mistakes so that You receive all the praise. Help me to keep “short accounts” with You and others so that my life reflects the truth of Isaiah 1:18. And help me to grow in spiritual maturity to develop from drinking milk to handing the meat of Your Word with greater clarity and wisdom daily. Amen.
