A Meditation on Gloria in Excelsis Deo

The lyrics for this beloved carol are based on a Book of Common Prayer from 1662. The words focus on Jesus’ deity, His holiness, and titles such as Heavenly King, Father Almighty, Jesu-Christ, and Lamb of God.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo means to give glory to God. Whether praise is represented by an angelic host—as is presented in the Luke 2 account of Jesus’ birth, amid a Christmas Eve service or other worship settings, or our private offering of praise—it means that we offer adoration and thanksgiving to our Lord and Abba Daddy. It means that we intentionally set our minds on “things above,” God’s Word, or His attributes to see His faithfulness toward us.

I chose to focus these verses on the titles from Isaiah 9:6 because these have helped me to grow and know the Lord personally. These “names” have made my interactions with Jesus more meaningful. They have given me a rich and deeper understanding of His character and love for me. And I’m hoping they do the same for you.

Dear Lord, how blessed it would have been to be among those who were gathered ‘round the manger. But greater still, how magnificent to be gathered ‘round Your throne, forever, to love, serve and honor You, and to sing Your praise. Gloria Excelsis Deo, indeed, to God alone be the Glory! Amen.
